Bringing More Visitors into the City

Extending Wellington Airport's Runway

Before Extension vs. After Extension

The extension of Wellington Airports runway, will allow for long haul flights to and from the city, that aren’t currently able to be offered. In doing so, it will increase the volume of visitors significantly, make international business more efficient and convenient, plus long haul airfares will be more affordable for us locals - as less flight connections will be needed. All in all, it would be a great boost for the Wellington Region and importantly, our existing tourism industry also.

Currently, the extension consent application is on hold as, “Following a High Court ruling in favour of Wellington Airport and the CAA, the Court of Appeal upheld a claim by the NZ Airlines Pilots’ Association that the Civil Aviation Authority did not correctly apply the rules on the runway end safety areas for the runway extension proposal.

The judgment on the subsequent appeal to the Supreme Court was delivered in December. While the outcome requires Wellington Airport to resubmit the proposal for the runway end safety area.”

Looking into the future impacts of this extension, I assume that as the tourism industry grows, more attractions and businesses will consider Wellington as a site to open new locations.
