Something raw and poetic

After much discussion, brainstorming and refining our concept. We have decided to run with the reflection theme. The (we)llington tagline will still remain similar and will accompany other reflective aspects of the project. Our ideas have been inspired by a number of existing projects. One being a monument for the anxious and hopeful. (http://rubinmuseum.org/events/exhibitions/a-monument-for-the-anxious-and-hopeful) Which was an exhibition at the Rubin Museum that invited its guests to add to the wall, writing down one thing they were anxious about and one thing they are hopeful for;

We loved this idea and thought that making the citizens part of the exhibition was something we could implement in our city branding project, giving the whole project a 'for the people, by the people' kind of vibe. So this is what we are thinking. Large, reflective cubes will be placed in 5 different locations around the city for a month. Citizens can enter into these cubes and interact with the installation inside.

The installation, inspired by a monument to the anxious and hopeful, will be large words displayed on the wall that read: I'm hopeful because Wellington... The citizens then finish the sentence. We think this will inspire the Wellingtonian to think more deeply about place and bring to the surface a reminder to appreciate our city.

The individual answers, the snippets of peoples lives and thoughts are then gathered and compiled to make up the 2nd and 3rd touchpoints: The posters and the publication. The mirror board posters will have the tagline (we)llington and read the same promt as the installation. "I'm hopeful because Wellington..." The individuals answer, in their own handwriting will be displayed underneath. We think this will encourage Wellingtonians to pay attention to the posters in hope of seeing their own words and feelings displayed with pride around the city. As people look more closely at the posters, they see (we)llington tagline, and then they see themselves.

Our final touchpoint is a publication. Inspired by the book 'suggestions' by a group called 'illegal art'. The group collects suggestions from the citizens of New York City for a year and created a book out of the suggestions. It generates a raw and vivid portrayal of the New Yorker. our publication will do something similar. Again, it will be mirror board, accompanied by the words " I'm hopeful because Wellington..." and the tagline (we)llington. Inside, will be the contributions collected from the initial reflective cube exhibition. The publication marks the end of the campaign but not the end of the journey. The book can then be sold in other parts of New Zealand (or even the world) as a personal, emotional reflection of life in Wellington, New Zealand. When a sense of city pride is manifest from within, it can encourage external engagement. We wanted there to be nothing corporate about this approach, it is inspired by the rawness of people, of reflection of awareness of place and belonging. It is truly for the people, by the people.
